A Hannukah Menorah, or Hanukiyah, has nine candle holders, including eight main holders for each night of Hannukah and one more to light the others, called the Shamash. During Hannukah, candles are placed right to left and then lit left to right. It is a mitzvah to light candles in memory of the miracle of the Maccabee victory and miraculous burning of a scarce bit of oil lasting eight days in the Holy Temple.
